Test Pipe vs. Gutted Cat??

Any difference in sound and flow between the two?

Since I have a spare cat laying around now I wouldn't mind trying it but dont want to destroy a part worth some $$ if it's not going to perform as good as a test pipe or be louder.

Figure a gutted cat could also avoid an expensive violation ticket if anyone ever notices it under the car.

What do you all think?

Yup, I gutted my spare cat out. You will feel the extra pull. With my stock ITR muffler, it's just a tad louder at WOT. Idle/cruise, it's the same loudness. When I first put it on, I had an exhaust leak and I thought it was caused by the gutted cat..but after putting a gasket in to solve that leak problem, it's quiet like stock.
I also ordered a test pipe..probably will be here this Friday or early next week. I'm going to put it in and see if it really make any difference comparing to the gutted cat.

Yup, the Federal fine is something crazy like $10,000. In Texas, I've never had a cop look under the car but if they do and see a test pipe...oh boy...
Anyhow, i do not notice any rattling or anything with the hollowed cat. I guess the stock ITR muffler silences it very well. I ordered a test pipe with shield on it. Will be here any day now I'll let u know if it makes any difference.

I gutted my cat and it made a really bad rattling sound between 3K and 4K RPM. I really noticed a big difference in power.
I just replaced the gutted cat with a test pipe to get rid of the terrible rattle.

I have a "Lightened" cat... it is loud. The power is really good.
I have not done a back to back test to see if a test-pipe would be better... some say that the exhaust gas gets turbulent inside the larger chamber of the cat-body and this disturbs the exhaust gas flow.
I am sure that both would work well. I chose the cat mod because of the possibility of someone LOOKING for trouble under my car. A visual inspection would be no problem for me.

damn, i just got the test pipe yesterday. Looks wayyyy ghetto. It has a flange for the heatshield which is cool but the actual flanges on the test pipe is just junk. I need to find some real flanges and redo the thing properly.

Got it from testpipe.com. Truely a POS. They basically flatten the pipe out to use it as a flange..arghhh.
